New 'Creature' Featurette For ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Showcases Lots Of Practical VFX

New 'Creature' Featurette For ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Showcases Lots Of Practical VFX

A big emphasis was placed on the return of practical effects to Star Wars films after Disney purchased the franchise, and it looks like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is living up to that promise...

A lot of criticism for George Lucas's Star Wars prequels fell on their over-reliance for CGI characters and environments as opposed to the practical visual effects the series was built on. Thankfully when the franchise was purchased by Disney in 2012, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy promised the priority of using practical VFX over CGI (when possible) during the making of the new films.

The Force Awakens  lived up to fan expectations by having a very intricate balance between CGI and practical effects, and based on a new featurette, it looks like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be following suit. The short clip provides a look at some of the film's new creatures and the process that goes into crafting their realiastic facial expressions and movements.

Check the featurette out below, along with two TV spots with a slice of new footage.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.

The movie opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.
